About Council #13429

How did the SMOY Council form and when?

Aug 2003
Knight of Columbus (KoC) District Deputy (DD) Jim Klatte got permission from Father Tom Kreidler to form a KoC Council at SMOY. Father Jim Simons was the driving force for this meeting. He ultimately wanted a group of men to band together and figure out a way to finish the basement spaces in the new church.

October 2003
Membership recruiting drive was held after masses on two Sundays. Ultimately 35 parish men signed up to become KoC members and they received their 1st & 2nd degrees at a local council.

November 2003
This group of new members received their 3rd degree and met to elect the following slate of officers and members to charter the SMOY council:

Fr. Jim Simons Chaplain
John J DeStefano Grand Knight
John A Cengel Deputy Grand Knight
James C Landon Chancellor
Thomas W Fry Advocate
Richard J Rossiter Recorder
James V Tovinitti Treasurer
Frederick E Bauer Financial Secretary
F Patrick Slattery Warden
Paul G Bauer Inside Guard
Douglas A Arnold Outside Guard
Leo A Massaro Trustee for 1 Year
Jeffrey J Audia Trustee for 2 Years
Donald J Ginnetti Trustee for 3 Years

The council hit the ground running and was highly recognized during 2004, our first year:

  • Star Council Award from the Supreme Council for meeting all goals in membership, insurance, and council activities in the six fraternal categories.
  • Received award from the Ohio State Council for the highest average dollar amount collected per member in the Annual Measure-Up Campaign, the KoC’s annual signature fund raising event for mentally challenged individuals.
  • Our Grand Knight, John DeStefano, was awarded the William J. Rieckleman Award as the Cincinnati Knight of The Year by the Cincinnati Chapter.
  • Fr. Jim Simons was honored as the Religious of the Year by the Cincinnati Chapter.

Since 2003 the SMOY Council has grown from 35 Charter Members to more than 90 active members in 2012. We have banded together with two other District 16 councils to form our own 1st Degree Team. And, the SMOY 2013 Free Throw Contest sent three kids to the regional finals.

What do you support and how?
